I was very honoured to be invited to the Diwali celebrations at Anand Day centre today. The festival of lights is an invocation of the blessings of light and knowledge, and the compassion which accompanies it.
Anand is part of ASRA Housing Association, and is one the charities which works closely with Age UK Barnet. It was lovely to see other members of the Barnet Older Peoples Provider group at the celebration, including trustees from CROFTE, which supports Tamil Elders. In addition to the religious celebrations, it was an opportunity for Anand to showcase their work to a wider audience, including the exercise classes run led by Deborah from Age UK Barnet.
You can watch Deborah in action here at one of our Falls Awareness events (kindly sponsored by Home Instead Barnet). The next one is on31 October by the way.
You can find out more about exercise classes for 50+ here:
It includes everything from seated exercise, to Nordic walking, tai chi to dancing.
If dancing is your thing then you may be interested to know about some of the musicians who have promised cards to Age UK Barnet’s Secret Postcard Sale.
I have to start with Annie Lennox OBE. And then I have to stop, because what can I say that you don’t already know about her? Annie, we are so grateful and so honoured. Thank you. If you would like to hear that extraordinary voice, you could do worse than click on her website.
Horace Panter, bassist from The Specials, is also an accomplished artist, producing bold icon inspired art. He recently painting a portrait of Amy Winehouse. Take a look at his work on his website here
Tyler Rix, saxophonist and model, is a local to the London Borough of Barnet and has also kindly offered a postcard. His website is here:
As well as these postcards, we have had donated some autographed posters by Paul Weller and a sweatshirt and signed DVD from Chase & Status. We will put these on eBay (I’ll let you know when they are posted). In the meantime, let me know – should I sell the two Chase & status items as a single lot, or as two? Answers on a.. well you know, or leave me a comment.
I leave you with a quote from one of Annie’s songs.
“Dying is easy, it’s living that scares me today”
Please help me raise money to make sure that is not true for older people in Barnet.
