Secret Postcard Sale

As I write this I am still, just about, chair of Age UK Barnet. I’ve done my 6 years, so on Tuesday, at the AGM, I will be standing down and passing on the role to Jonathan Fenton, who will, I am sure, be absolutely brilliant in the role.

I’m really proud of the work that Age UK Barnet does, which is why I am happy to put my name and personal effort into fundraising for it.

Our next big fundraiser is a Secret Postcard Sale which will be held on 23 November in North Finchley. Save the date in your diary; it will be worth a visit.

I want to use this blog to explain what a Secret Postcard Sale is, how you can get involved and tell you about some of the artists, celebrities and local people who have donated cards.

So what is it?

The basic idea is that lots of people make and donate a postcard with artwork in any medium on the front and sign the back. They can draw, paint, collage, photograph, embroider, knit or potato print. Any medium, any subject.

The cards are then all sold for a single flat price, no matter who the artist is.

Purchasers buy the cards without knowing for certain who made it, although there is a list of contributors available, so they know who it might be. This means it is partly an art sale (because you buy an image you love) and partly a raffle (because you might have picked a card by a famous artist or celebrity which is may be worth more than you paid for it).

The proceeds go to Age UK Barnet and everyone goes home happy. That is it. Simple really.

Can I take part?

Absolutely. The more the merrier. I’ve had postcards donated by 6 year olds and 86 year olds, professional and amateur artists, actors, musicians, comedians, poets and bloggers.

There are two ways you can give postcards:

You can come along to Meze Meze Restaurant, 880 High Road, North Finchley, N12 9RH between 11 am and 3pm on Saturday 26 October, where artist Jill Therleigh will be waiting with inspiration and free materials.  There will be lots of other things happening on the High Road that day, which you can read about here:

Thank you.
